Review of the Workplace Health and Safety Strategy

Why are we reviewing the Strategy?

The Department of Labour is reviewing the Workplace Health and Safety Strategy for New Zealand. The review is underway and will be reported up to government by the end of July 09.

When the strategy was launched in 2005, government signalled the need for it to be reviewed after three years of implementation.

In addition to the scheduled need for the review, the current climate provides a timely opportunity to take stock of workplace health and safety in New Zealand and ensure we’re all doing things as effectively, efficiently and innovatively as possible.

“We want the review to result in practical and constructive improvement to workplace health and safety, and business performance. This improvement will require a combination of actions by government, industry and the community” Craig Armitage - Deputy Secretary, workplace Group

Key Questions

The review effectively seeks to answer four questions:

  1. What progress has been made in workplace health and safety in New Zealand over the last three years?
  2. What is working well and should be continued or expanded?
  3. What are the main barriers to achieving healthy people in safe and productive workplaces?
  4. What should the current and future priorities for workplace health and safety in New Zealand be?

Four action areas have been identified to stimulate and inform your contribution to the review. We suggest that you actively consider these action areas in your responses to the review questions.
